Extending the deadline for the third time, the Supreme Court on Sunday directed the accountability court in Islamabad to decide all three graft references against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family within a month.
The Supreme Court’s second deadline for the accountability court to dispose of graft cases against Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (r) Safdar expired on June 9.
Heading a Supreme Court bench at Lahore registry on Sunday, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar took up NAB court’s application seeking extension in the deadline and ordered the accountability court to decide all three references against Sharif family within four weeks. The chief justice rejected a plea by Nawaz Sharif’s senior counsel Khawaja Haris to complete the trial in six weeks. The chief justice said that these cases should be decided without any further delay and directed the accountability court to hear the references even on Saturdays and Sundays, if needed.
The chief justice observed that Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz can go to London to inquire after Kulsoom Nawaz after filing an application in the accountability court.
The accountability court is currently recording the testimony of Wajid Zia – the star prosecution witness in the Al-Azizia reference and the head of the joint investigation team (JIT) that probed the Panama Papers case. After him, the prosecution will produce its final witness in Al-Azizia reference – an investigation official of the NAB. At some point, Wajid Zia and the NAB officer in question will also have to testify in the Flagship reference, while recording of the final arguments in all three references is also on the agenda.
